Kalterherberg is the most popular starting point for hiking in the nearby Hohes Venn National Park (Hohes Venn).
The Hohes Venn National Park with its moors offers endless hiking trails in an extraordinary nature. The demanding nature-lover can find woods with red deer, wild boars and wild cats, as well as trout and tench in numerous runs and rivers as an indicator for an intact nature. It is no problem to reach the Hohes Venn National Park by feet from the vacation home.
Various hiking trails lead you to oldtown Monschau (historische Altstadt Monschau), which is only in between a 5 km distance from the house.
Monschau offers a variety of sights with its historical mustard mill (Historische Senfmühle), the Red House (Rotes Haus), the Brewery-Museum (Brauerei-Museum) and Roman Glassworks with the tradermarket, to name only a few.
The Christmasmarket in Monschaus town center, with the half-timbering facades as a scenery, is popular even beyond the countryborders.
A visit to the public pool (Vennbad) in Monschau might also be recommended.
More pools and spas can be found in Bad Muenstereifel, Wuerselen and Kreuzau.
The fascinating lakeland district in the Eifel, with the Rursee and miscellaneous dams, as well in Germany (Rur-, Olef-, Perlbach-, Wehebach-, Dreilaegerbach-, and Urfttaldam), as in Belgium (Eupen, Buetgenbach and Robertville), is waiting to be explored.
Swimming in the Rursee is possible in Einruhr and Rurberg and in the dams of Buetgenbach and Robertville.
Any kinds of watersports are possible on and around the Rursee as well as on the lakes of Buetgenbach and Robertville.
In the Roetgen-Therme (a spa with 5.000 square metres of garden and 2.000 square metres inside) you find steambaths, a seawaterpool and a sauna village.
Always a wonderful experience is a biking tour through the Eifel-woods or around one of the numerous lakes, not only for mountain-bikers.
Wintersports possibilities exist as well for cross-country skiing (lots of cross country ski runs).
